43 Career Pathways, Countless Possibilities for Arizona Students
By Dr. Scott Spurgeon, Superintendent, West-MEC
GLENDALE, Ariz., Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — For today’s high school students, planning for the future looks different than it did a generation ago. Students are increasingly seeking educational experiences that allow them to explore careers, develop practical skills and discover their passions before graduation.
Career and technical education (CTE) provides that opportunity by connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences.
At Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC), we see firsthand how hands-on learning can transform a student’s educational journey. Whether working in a healthcare lab, learning to weld, or exploring IT security, students gain more than technical knowledge. They earn industry-recognized credentials, gain practical experience, discover their strengths, build confidence and begin to envision their futures.
As interest in career-focused education grows, so does the importance of providing students with diverse pathways to success.
Applications for West-MEC’s 2027–28 school year are now open, offering students access to 43 career pathways, including several new programs launching in fall 2027. These include:
- Architectural Design
- Drone Technology
- Low-Voltage Electrical
- Plumbing Technology
- Energy Operations
- Hospitality Management
- Logistics, Distribution & Robotics
- Patient Care Technology
- Sterile Processing Technology
- Emergency Room Technician
With more opportunities to explore their interests, students can pursue pathways aligned with their individual goals. Across all West-MEC programs, students can complete with industry-recognized credentials, work-based learning experience and in select programs earn college credits.
Many students enter the workforce directly, while others pursue higher education, military, apprenticeships or specialized training. Whatever path they choose, West-MEC’s Career Services team provides support and resources to help students connect with opportunities upon completing their West-MEC program.
With applications now open, I encourage students and families to explore the possibilities that career and technical education offers. Whether you’re a high school sophomore, junior or senior, now is the time to discover your faster way forward.
