Bollywood Icons Face FDA Scrutiny Over Controversial Campaigns

In a dramatic twist on the Bollywood stage, Maharashtra’s FDA Commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe, has taken center stage by sending show-cause notices to beloved actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Tiger Shroff. Their alleged role in endorsing Vimal Elaichi, believed to be a surrogate for a tobacco product, has caught the FDA’s attention.

The Unfolding Drama

At a lively ‘Meet the Press’ event hosted by the Mumbai Press Club, Mundhe spoke candidly about the prevalence of questionable advertising. He highlighted that commercials, whether splashed across newspapers, beamed through television screens, or shared feverishly on social media platforms, all fall under the vigilant eye of the FDA.

“We are on the lookout for any violations,” Mundhe asserted, hinting at the scrutiny celebrities and brands face in the realm of advertising.

Bollywood’s Big Names Under the Microscope

Earlier this month, the FDA issued show-cause notices to the trio of Bollywood icons, accusing them of engaging in indirect or surrogate advertising for Vimal Elaichi. This campaign is allegedly linked to banned pan masala and tobacco products. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the FDA has yet to receive a response from the actors.

A Broader Battle

When quizzed further, Mundhe expressed the FDA’s commitment to taking action against any food business operator (FBO) that fails to meet the required standards. The FDA’s vigilance is not limited to any particular group, be it film industry professionals, workers, or everyday consumers.

Mundhe reiterated that Maharashtra has upheld a ban on pan masala and tobacco products since 2012, underscoring the state’s strict stance on these matters.

In a related crackdown, the FDA recently investigated 86 food establishments across Maharashtra that operate online, issuing 60 improvement notices and ordering the temporary suspension of one site.
