National Press Club Statement on attack of Washington Post journalist in the West Bank

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — National Press Club President Mark Schoeff Jr. released the following statement today:

“The National Press Club condemns the attack on Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine.

Levine was viciously assaulted while doing exactly what an independent reporter is supposed to do – bearing witness to events unfolding in the West Bank. We’re glad to hear she is receiving the medical attention she needs.

Journalists should never be targets in areas of conflict or anywhere else. A free and independent press cannot function properly under the threat of violence.

The Israeli government must conduct a full investigation into the incident and hold those responsible accountable. A brazen attack like this cannot go unanswered. If it does, it could put other journalists at risk by encouraging additional violence against the media.”
