Samsung Initiates Mass Production of PM1763 SSD for Enhanced AI and HPC Infrastructure
Samsung Electronics, a prominent entity in the field of advanced memory technology, has commenced mass production of its PM1763, a PCIe 6.0-based enterprise solid state drive (SSD) tailored for the demands of next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) server environments.
Given the escalating data requirements for AI training and inference, the need for enterprise SSDs (eSSDs) that can swiftly and dependably deliver data has become paramount for AI infrastructure.
Advanced Features and Performance
The PM1763, with its high-speed data transfer capabilities and optimized controller architecture, is poised to become an essential storage solution for high-performance AI platforms. Jangseok Choi, Vice President and Head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics, emphasized, “PM1763 has successfully completed validation for next-generation AI platforms and stands ready to support the evolving needs of AI infrastructure.”
The PM1763 integrates Samsung’s ninth-generation V-NAND and a newly engineered 4-nanometer controller, resulting in significant enhancements in both performance and power efficiency.
Capacity and Speed
Available in 4-terabyte (TB), 8TB, and 16TB capacities, the 16TB version offers leading-edge performance, achieving sequential read and write speeds of up to 28,400 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and 21,900MB/s, respectively, effectively doubling the performance of the preceding model, PM1753.
This advancement enables the rapid transfer of a 40-gigabyte (GB) large language model (LLM) in approximately 1.4 seconds, reducing data latency between processors and accelerators while enhancing overall AI processing efficiency.
Enhanced Cooling and Efficiency
The PM1763 is optimized for liquid-cooled server environments through direct-to-chip (D2C) cooling technology, which supports sustained peak performance under heavy workloads and prolonged operating conditions. Furthermore, power efficiency is improved by over 1.8 times compared to the previous generation, contributing to reduced datacenter operational costs.
Security Enhancements
To meet increasing security demands in AI, Samsung has fortified PM1763’s security features. The drive supports post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms designed to counter future quantum computing threats, alongside TEE Device Interface Security Protocol (TDISP) to secure data pathways in virtualized environments.
