Statement by Minister Miller on Bandi Chhor Divas
Government of Canada issues a statement to mark Bandi Chhor Divas
OTTAWA, ON, Nov. 8, 2026 /CNW/ — The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, made the following statement:
“Today, Sikh communities in Canada and around the world celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, a holiday that honours the release of Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, along with 52 kings who had been wrongfully imprisoned in India in the 17th century.
According to tradition, when he was offered the chance to regain his freedom, the guru refused to leave prison without the other inmates, insisting that the 52 kings be released as well. His courageous act speaks to the importance of standing together and ensuring no one is left behind. Sikhism reminds us that caring for one another is essential to building a stronger and united society.
Today more than ever, in an increasingly divided and uncertain world, Bandi Chhor Divas calls on us to uphold the values we share as Canadians: justice, solidarity, compassion and respect for the dignity of every person. These values bring us together and remain at the heart of who we are as Canadians.
To everyone celebrating Bandi Chhor Divas, I wish you a celebration filled with peace, joy and prosperity.”
