Threads unveils new features as it reaches 500 million users

Today, we are excited to announce that Threads has achieved a significant milestone of 500 million monthly active users. This accomplishment highlights the appeal of having a public platform centered around conversation. The rise in users is largely fueled by communities — groups of people engaging in discussions on topics they are passionate about, such as books, basketball, parenting, and music. These communities have been instrumental in shaping Threads, and we are now introducing new features to make their interactions even more meaningful and dynamic.

New features for communities on Threads

One of the fastest-growing features on Threads since its introduction last year has been the communities feature. Today, we are moving it out of beta and adding some of the most sought-after features as we continue to support the people and communities who have brought us this far:

  • Communities Hub: We are simplifying the process of finding and switching between communities by integrating them into the main menu on the left side of your feed.
  • Community Icons: Each community now has its own unique visual identity, making them easier to identify and recognize throughout Threads.
  • Community Progress: Users can now see when a topic is nearing the status of becoming a community and learn how they can contribute to its development.
  • Community Champions: We are granting community champion status to more participants across various communities.
  • Local Communities: We are localizing communities, starting with native-language tags in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

In the coming weeks, we will be broadening the availability of Live Chats to more communities, including features like co-hosting and the ability to quote moments directly to your feed.

Enhancing control over your conversations

Earlier this year, we launched Dear Algo, allowing you to communicate with the Threads algorithm about your preferences for content visibility. Now, based on user feedback, we are introducing Your Algo, a new feature that lets you privately manage the conversations you view in your feed.

With Your Algo, you can specify if you want to see more or less of certain topics and select the duration of this preference, whether it be one, three, or seven days. These requests remain private, and both Dear Algo and Your Algo can be managed within a single unified hub.

Your Algo is being rolled out today in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. These updates mark just the beginning. We will continue to refine Threads based on user feedback to ensure it remains the premier space for discovering communities and engaging in significant conversations.
