Apple introduces enhanced Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chips
Apple has unveiled the latest version of its Mac mini, equipped with the new M6 and M5 Pro chips, promising significant improvements in AI performance and overall versatility. The updated Mac mini exhibits up to four times faster AI capabilities, doubles the speed of graphics and storage, and enhances connectivity options, all while maintaining its compact design.
Announced in Toronto, Ontario, the new Mac mini models are set to elevate computing performance with these advanced chips. The M6 chip offers up to four times faster AI performance, twice the speed in storage and graphics, and a 40 percent improvement in CPU performance. This ensures that tasks, ranging from standard productivity to advanced AI workflows, are completed with remarkable speed.
The Mac mini equipped with the M5 Pro is designed for professional use, handling complex projects such as video production and game development with ease. These models also feature Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and upgraded Ethernet capabilities. Users can opt for a 10Gb Ethernet option for even faster connectivity.
Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, commented, “Mac mini has always been our most versatile Mac. Today, we’re taking this versatility even further.” He highlighted the enhancements in CPU and graphics, as well as the introduction of Neural Accelerators and enhanced memory bandwidth. These improvements make the Mac mini a powerful tool for complex workflows.
The M6 chip features a 12-core CPU, which is an increase of two cores from previous models, providing the fastest single-threaded performance. With a 12-core GPU and integrated Neural Accelerators, the Mac mini offers up to four times faster AI and twice the graphics performance compared to the earlier M4 models.
For professional users, the M5 Pro chip includes up to an 18-core CPU and a 20-core GPU, making it ideal for demanding tasks such as app development and 3D design. This model supports up to 64GB of unified memory and 307GB/s of memory bandwidth, allowing for efficient handling of large datasets and complex projects.
The Mac mini also introduces new connectivity features, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, alongside 2.5Gb Ethernet connectivity, with optional 10Gb Ethernet available. The front of the device includes two USB-C ports and a headphone jack, while the back houses three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, and Ethernet connections. Thunderbolt 5 technology allows for clustering multiple Mac minis for advanced AI processing.
The Mac mini is powered by macOS 27, which introduces enhanced Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features. Siri AI offers improved personal assistance, while Apple Intelligence enhances app functionality and user experience. The operating system also includes updates for performance, search, and interface design, ensuring a more responsive and customizable experience.
Environmentally conscious, the new Mac mini incorporates 50 percent recycled materials, including 100 percent recycled aluminum and rare earth elements in its construction. Apple is committed to achieving a carbon-neutral footprint by 2030, with the Mac mini contributing to this goal through its sustainable manufacturing process.
The new Mac mini is available for pre-order immediately, with shipments starting on September 22.
