Meta urges TikTok and YouTube to support teens with new measures
We have announced a new agreement formed with a bipartisan group of 52 attorneys general from across the United States, including states, territories, and the District of Columbia. This initiative builds upon our ongoing efforts to empower parents and provide support for teenagers.
Through this agreement, we aim to establish industry-wide commitments that further empower parental control by implementing the following measures:
- A daily time limit of two hours
- Setting default settings to turn off app access at night
- No notifications during school hours
- Clear prompts and notifications to alert teens every 15 minutes of continuous screen time
- New parental supervision controls allowing parents to determine how their teens use our apps
We are committed to ensuring that teens benefit from these new industry standards, yet we recognize that we cannot achieve this alone. The effectiveness of these protections largely depends on cooperation with our industry peers — TikTok and YouTube. We call on these platforms to implement the same measures.
All platforms should take steps to empower parents and support teenagers in these ways. It is important because when teens encounter restrictions on one app, they often move to another. To ensure meaningful progress, we strongly encourage our peers to join us in this endeavor.
